  Trees are not only an important natural resource, but also a valuable addition to any landscape.  Trees increase property values and enhance the appearance of surroundings. 

  Periodic pruning of trees is a great way to extend their life and vigor.  Pruning is also done to remove dead or diseased wood, raise canopies and enhance shape.

Text Box: prevent damage to the tree.  Cuts should be made just outside the collar of the branch.  On larger, heavier branches, cuts should be made 12-18 inches away from the trunk of the tree to prevent the bark from tearing.  The first cut should be on the underside of the branch and a second cut  on the top side will allow the branch to fall without damaging the tree.  
  Finally, cut the remaining stub just Text Box: beyond the collar of the branch.
 It is also important to limit pruning to only what is necessary.  Heavy pruning, especially on older trees, can limit the tree’s ability to produce sugar and reduce its vigor.  Always have a plan in mind before beginning.  Every cut should have a reason and you will end up with a beautiful, healthy tree.

  At this time of year, it is important to apply a pre-emergent to help prevent spring and summer weeds from germinating.  If you are seeing weeds now, it would be wise to use a post-emergent to Text Box: try to kill the weeds to allow new grass to grow in their place.  To get the best control, it is important to identify the weeds and differentiate between annual weeds and perennial weeds.  There are many control products on the market that are weed specific.  Knowing the types of weeds assists us in Text Box: choosing the most effective product control.   
  At the beginning of the growing season, it would be a good idea to use a fertilizer high in nitrogen to jump start the greening of your lawn.  Usually, three more well-timed applications are all that is necessary over the spring and summer to give you a yard your neighbors should envy.
